About Joan's Legacy and Uniting Against Lung Cancer

Joan’s Legacy:  Uniting Against Lung Cancer is committed to fight lung cancer by funding innovative research and increasing awareness of the disease, including in never smokers.

In only six years of funding, Joan’s Legacy and its partners have awarded over $5 Million in direct research grants to individual researchers at top cancer centers and raised awareness of lung cancer across the United States. The first nonprofit in the U.S. to identify and cultivate lung cancer research, including in never smokers, Joan’s Legacy has quickly become recognized as the “venture capital” source for lung cancer research in the U.S.

Because the battle against lung cancer can only be won by working together, and the reason each person cares about lung cancer is often very personal, the name “Uniting Against Lung Cancer” was created.  Using this legally-established name, groups can run awareness and fundraising events in their loved one’s honor and direct donations to Uniting Against Lung Cancer, thereby avoiding name confusion with “Joan’s Legacy.”  All the while, knowing that donations to Uniting Against Lung Cancer benefit from the same strong Medical Committee, the same successful research program, and the same solid nonprofit status, while expanding the kinds of lung cancer studied.

Joan's Legacy is named for Joan Scarangello McNeive, a gifted writer, life-long New Yorker and nonsmoker, who died at age 47 in 2001 after a valiant nine-month fight with lung cancer. Started by her legion of family and friends, Joan’s Legacy is now a leading resource in the search for new treatments and a cure for lung cancer, and the end to the smoking-related stigma that plagues victims of the lung cancer diagnosis.

Joan's bravery, her fight for life and unwavering search for new treatments inspire us.

Today Joan's Legacy is:
Awarding individual research grants;
Promoting and recognizing excellence in journalism about lung cancer to increase awareness about the disease;

Collaborating with other not-for-profit organizations that join us in seeking a cure for lung cancer in all its forms.

In Memoriam:

Board Member, Barbara Parisi 1949 - 2004

The Barbara Parisi Lung Cancer Research Grant has been established in her honor.

We honor the memory of our Board Member and friend, who inspired us with her valiant fight to beat lung cancer -- both the disease and the stigma that haunts the diagnosis. She was tireless in her campaign, bringing intelligence, hope and a tenacious can-do spirit to increasing understanding of the disease and the desperate need for greater research funding. Throughout her illness, she made time to encourage other patients and also to celebrate her life and the family she loved so much. Barbara will forever inspire us.
