Joan's Legacy honors Joan Scarangello's memory and her profession by seeking out and recognizing exceptional journalism about lung cancer, women and the disease, and/or about nonsmokers and lung cancer.

The Joanie Award is awarded each year to the finest journalism (broadcast or print) because:

Joan, a producer and writer, appreciated quality reporting and;

bullet she wanted to improve the information about lung cancer being shared with the public.

Every November, Joan's Legacy presents its Joanie Award for journalism which speaks to the issues, dangers and medical developments about lung cancer. The winner is selected by a committee of broadcast and journalism leaders. This committee reviews broadcast and print journalism submissions to select a journalist whose work elevates the reporting community and best serves the public.

The "Joanie Award" Statue was created by sculptor Catherine Bohrman, by commission from the Joan Scarangello Foundation. The 12" high sculpture is cast in bronze, from a mold created only for the Joanie awards. The sculptor has been an artist for 20 years, working first in stone and now in bronze and aluminum. Her pieces are in collections around the world. More examples of her work can be seen at www.catherinebohrman.com.
