Southampton – In an event that proved the warm hearts of its students and the sportsmanship of the faculty and administration, Southampton High School’s students and teachers hosted a student-organized “Pie Throw” Monday raising more than $300 for lung cancer research.
Students donated $1 for each pie and the opportunity to hurl it at the faculty member of their choice. Hundreds of students cheered in the gym as pies were thrown at more than a dozen faculty members from every department who participated in the event.
Proceeds of the "Pie Throw" benefit Joan’s Legacy: Uniting Against Lung Cancer (www.joanslegacy.org), a foundation that funds innovative research into the country’s number one cancer killer.
Southampton High School held the "Pie Throw" to kick off its larger community service campaign for the foundation, which will continue throughout the spring semester and culminate in volunteerism at the foundation’s “Kites for a Cure” family kite fly Memorial Day Weekend set for May 24 at Cooper’s Beach.
“Our students, faculty and staff are committed to community service activities that make a material difference to the success of different programs that touch the lives of our families and neighbors,” Principal of Southampton High School Nick Dyno commented. “You can see we also like to find different ways to make philanthropy fun. Believe it or not,” he joked, “the kids came up with this idea themselves.”
Joan’s Legacy is named for Joan Scarangello, a Southampton resident who died in 2001 of lung cancer at age 47, having never smoked. The foundation has funded $3.6 million in grants to spur innovative research projects about the causes, treatments and cures for lung cancer.
“We are so proud that Southampton High School has made Joan’s Legacy a focus of their extraordinary community service contributions,” said Susan C. Mantel, the foundation’s Executive Director. "Their great spirit, generosity and boundless enthusiasm are invaluable.”
Last year, more than 75 Southampton High School students and faculty served as volunteers at Joan’s Legacy’s Kites for a Cure benefit. This year, the students will also be painting kites for display at Chrysalis Gallery in Southampton to raise awareness of lung cancer, as well as helping execute the family-fun event.
Kites for a Cure will take place on Saturday, May 24, with a rain date of Sunday, May 25, at Cooper’s Beach from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Parking is free. A suggested donation of $25 for every kite entered. Kite fliers may register in advance or to learn how to recruit family, friends and co-workers to sponsor your kite online at www.joanslegacy.org or by calling the New York headquarters of the foundation at 212-627-5500.
