Newsday Writer Cited for Cancer Series

By Bill Mason

Newsday staff writer Lauren Terrazzano has won the 2007 Joanie Award from the Joan Scarangello Foundation to Conquer Lung Cancer for her series of articles about her own lung cancer experiences and those of others with the disease.

“Through your efforts, the lung cancer community has been represented by a brilliant, honest voice, and the broader community has been educated on issues of relevance to us all,” Susan C. Mantel, executive director of the foundation, said in a letter to Terrazzano.

Mantel said on of Terrazzano’s columns, “Lung cancer: Overlooked, underfunded,” will be reprinted in the foundation’s spring newsletter.

The foundation seeks to fund research and increase awareness, and focus on non-smoking related lung cancer.
