Creating a community of supporters was vital to Joan Scarangello’s own journey through lung cancer. Such a virtual community of survivors and their families and friends has been created in the new anthology, Voices of Lung Cancer, part of The Healing Companion: Stories for Courage, Comfort and Strength. Produced by The Healing Project, it includes Joan’s story, as told by her husband Patrick McNeive, and a foreword by Joan’s Legacy Executive Director, Susan Mantel. Other contributors include Diane Blum of CancerCare, Dr. Deborah Morosini, sister of Dana Reeve, and Law & Order’s S. Epatha Merkerson.
In the Voices Of book series, each book targets a specific illness and is an anthology of stories and essays written by patients, caregivers, medical professionals, celebrities and friends. Lung cancer was chosen as subject matter for one of the inaugural books in the series because of the staggering statistics associated with the disease.
“We hope this collaboration will raise much needed awareness of lung cancer, the nation’s #1 cancer killer. With over 200,000 new patients diagnosed each year, the need for more support and more research into effective diagnosis and treatments is dire,” said Susan C. Mantel, Executive Director. “We are honored to be included in such a comprehensive and thoughtful body of work.”
The Voices Of book series is available in bookstores now and can be purchased through online retailers like www.amazon.com.
