Gretchen L. McGarry Joins Lung Cancer Foundation as Director of Development

(New York, NY – August 23, 2007) Fundraising professional Gretchen L. McGarry has been named Director of Development of Joan’s Legacy: The Joan Scarangello Foundation to Conquer Lung Cancer.

Joan’s Legacy is named for Joan Scarangello, a writer and nonsmoker who died at age 47 after a valiant nine-month fight with lung cancer. Joan’s Legacy is committed to fighting lung cancer by searching for a cure and focusing greater attention on the world’s leading cancer killer. In just five years, Joan’s Legacy has awarded $2.4 Million in direct research grants to researchers at the finest cancer centers in the United States, built a national journalism awards program in honor of its namesake, and raised awareness of lung cancer throughout the country.  Joan’s Legacy has quickly become recognized as the “venture capital” source for lung cancer research.

As Director of Development, McGarry will work with the Board of Directors to execute the Foundation’s development initiatives. She will oversee fundraising activities for Joan’s Legacy and work to generate contributed support in the form of gifts, grants, bequests and other individual, corporate, and foundation sources to fund the operation and its programs, which focus on innovative research into the nation’s number one cancer killer.

“I am proud to play a role in an organization with such potential to save lives,” says McGarry. “Joan’s Legacy is confronting one of the major healthcare challenges of our time. Lung cancer research is woefully under funded.  We are committed to making a significant impact on this dreaded disease and believe the funds raised for our medical research grants will help accomplish that.”

McGarry brings with her over six years of health and human services development experience.  Prior to joining Joan’s Legacy, McGarry served as Development Director at the NY Unit of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, where she was directly responsible for the planning, execution and management of fundraising programs.  Before that she worked closely with medical professionals to raise funds at NewYork Weill Cornell Medical Center and The Skin Cancer Foundation.

McGarry holds a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Miami.  She is a member of Women in Development-New York
