Babylon & Southampton, NY – After two years of tremendous success, Uniting Against Lung Cancer has expanded its “Kites For a Cure” event. The foundation will host two family kite fly events this year in Babylon and Southampton.
The first (inaugural) benefit will be held at Overlook Beach in Babylon, NY, (Ocean Parkway) on Saturday, May 9, 2009 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. (Rain or shine.)
The second (and third annual) benefit will be held at Coopers Beach in Southampton, NY, on Saturday, May 23, 2009 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. (The rain date for the kite fly is Sunday, May 24 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.)
Guests will enjoy kites, snacks, music and family fun at both events, for a $25 donation, in advance or at the event itself. The money raised will support Uniting Against Lung Cancer and its national lung cancer awareness and research grant programs.
Over 500 families are expected to join in the fun at each of these events. Guests will be able to decorate their kites at the site – drawing pictures or memorial messages – and take advantage of the afternoon’s off-shore breezes to lift their kites to the sky.
Uniting Against Lung Cancer (formerly Joan’s Legacy) was founded in 2001 in memory of Joan Scarangello, a Southampton resident and non-smoker who lost her battle with lung cancer. The foundation funds innovative research into the causes, treatments and possible cures for the disease – the nation’s #1 cancer killer. To date, Uniting Against Lung Cancer has awarded over $5 million in grants to top cancer researchers at leading institutions around the United States.
